In the Jewish and greater world, we seem often paralyzed by unbridgeable and passionate arguments. These divides set adversaries so far apart from one another that relationships have been fractured and the fabric of communities torn asunder. Yet Jewish thought from the Talmudic era until today has created a possible compassionate alternative when, inevitably, conflict arises. It is possible to welcome engagement in debate over crucial issues, to hold onto the humanity of one's adversary, and together to create a more fruitful result. Texts from across the centuries will outline the shape of a “Machloket L’Shem Shamayim”, a disagreement for the sake of Heaven.
